We’ve been experiencing some beautiful weather in Calgary over the past few weeks, and it looks like this trend will continue. Here are a few helpful tips to help you get the most out of your health & fitness while the weather is great!
Get outside – Complement your indoor workouts with some exercise outside. Getting outdoors is good for your mental health. Biking, running, paddle boarding, walking, and swimming are just a few examples of fun outdoor activities to keep you moving! Or check out your local playground and do a body weight circuit workout.
Eat fresh fruits and vegetables – With heat, comes sweat. Make sure to stay hydrated, one great way is to eat fresh fruits and vegetables which generally have high water contents. A few suggestions are watermelon, honeydew, cucumber, celery, oranges, and bell peppers.
Drink plenty of water – Another way to stay hydrated is drinking water, aim to drink 8 glasses, or 2L of water daily. On extra hot days where you sweat more, be sure to drink a few extra glasses of water!
Take advantage of the cooler hours – Being in direct sunlight isn’t always the best when you’re trying to workout, take advantage of the mornings and evenings for things such as bike rides and running.
Walk when you can – Walking is a great, often overlooked, form of exercise. Make the most of the summer and walk whenever possible!
Take time for nature – Being in nature can be healing for the mind and soul. Hiking is a great way to get exercise while being surrounded by nature, with endless options in our national parks! If you’re planning to hike this summer remember to bring bug spray, sunscreen, Band-Aids, food, and lots of water.
Remember UV protection – While being outside is great for the mind and body, it’s not always great for the skin. Remember to wear sunscreen and reapply every hour! Wearing sunglasses and a hat can also be very beneficial and protect you from harmful UV rays.
Enjoy summer!
