Guilt Free Winter Vacation!

Try these 5 tips to feel your best while vacationing.

As the Holiday Season and cold weather approaches, so does peak vacation time when the beach sounds more appealing than the snow to many. Below are 5 tips to feel your best and avoid gaining an excessive amount of weight, all while enjoying your vacation.

Strength train prior to leaving – Building muscle before going on vacation can help your body burn more calories, this is due to muscle requiring more calories to sustain itself compared to fat. Muscle burns 7-10 calories per lb a day, while fat only burns 2-3 calories per lb a day. This can help your body to use those extra calories you wouldn’t normally eat to support your muscle!

Eat mindfully – Enjoying your vacation doesn’t mean you need to throw nutrition to the wind. When eating meals or snacks, do your best to include fruits and vegetable, and as much protein as you would normally consume. Enjoy your meals, while remaining mindful of balancing carbs, fats, and protein throughout the day, and try not to over fill yourself. Eating mindfully can help to keep digestion and bowel movements regular, and help you feel your best!

Drink lots of water – Water is incredibly important for digestion, energy levels, waste removal, and overall body function. Drinking a minimum of 2L a day on vacation can help to keep bowel movements regular, help you feel your best, and help to reduce any pesky hangovers if you’re indulging in alcohol. If you are planning on vacationing in a tropical environment such as Mexico, always keep bottled water with you to reduce the risk of dehydration.

Get movement in – When on vacation we don’t always want to workout, however we should aim to get some movement in daily. This can be walking on the beach, swimming, walking around the town or city, or playing group sports. Moving daily can help improve energy levels and mood, improve digestion, and make it easier to get back into your routine when you are home.

Sleep 7-9 hours a night – Sleep is the bodies most effective recovery tool. Sleeping 7-9 hours a night can help reduce inflammation, reduce stress, remove metabolic waste, improve mood, and increase energy levels. Who doesn’t like to sleep in on vacation!
