Finding Balance: How Exercise Alleviates Stress

We all face a range of stressors, both internal and external, in our daily lives. These can stem from work, home, or school. Internal stressors may manifest as negative self-talk, intolerance of uncertainty, or unhelpful thinking styles. External stressors can be triggered by major life events, trauma, demands, or fears.

These stressors can often have debilitating effects on a person’s mental and physical health. Nevertheless, thirty minutes of daily physical activity can reduce the potential impact of stress.

Here are four ways that exercise helps to alleviate a person’s stress:

(1)   Endorphin Release - Exercise triggers the release of endorphins, a neurotransmitter that acts as natural painkillers and mood elevators. They create a sense of well-being and reduce anxiety and stress.

(2)   Exercise Reduces Stress Hormones - Physical activity decreases the production of the stress hormone cortisol. Cortisol is released in response to stress and can lead to increased anxiety and tension. Exercise helps to lower cortisol levels, thereby reducing stress.

(3)   Improvement In Sleep Quality - Regular exercise can help regulate sleep patterns and improve sleep quality. Better sleep is essential for managing stress effectively and maintaining an overall well-being

(4)   Mood Enhancement - Exercise stimulates the production of neurotransmitters like serotonin and norepinephrine, which contribute to happiness and relaxation. These chemicals help to counteract the negative effects of stress.

An active lifestyle and a nutritional diet can help combat these internal and external stressors. At The Academy, we offer personal training, nutritional advice, group classes, and a safe place for individual workouts which helps individuals achieve a healthy lifestyle.
